How to save money on groceries

Remember the days when you didn’t wince at the price of milk or chicken. It can be hard managing to feed a family nutritious food on a moderate budget, coupled with the fact that you’re jiggling 2 jobs and can’t spend lots of time shopping or preparing meals. Here are a few tips for those busy families who still want to make sure they eat a home cooked meal and remain on budget.

  • Plan out your meals- Make sure you pre plan what you intend to cook for the entire week. This will mean that you will have to spend some time assessing recipes and listing out your groceries. Although this takes some time, you now have a clear idea of what you need.

  • Look for deals and discounts- Look out for supermarkets discount flyers or browse their website for discounts and special offers. For example if you see a discount on poultry or seafood, stock up for a month by labelling and freezing the excess.
  • By store brands- no named store brands are great, as they are a lot cheaper and taste a lot like the expensive big label brands.
  • Stretch your meals- Instead of making a beef lasagne, add a layer of beef and a layer of vegetable. Not only will you be able to use your ground beef for longer, you will be able to feed your family a healthier meal.
  • Include a few fun items- Make sure you include a few family favourites like ice cream and candy. You can always buy in bulk and portion out qualities for the week.
